Boston Dynamics-Built Robots Dance It Out To 'Do You Love Me?'
  • Robots With Rhythm

Technology can be confusing for some, helpful to others, and incredibly interesting depending on how you look at it. Ways for us to carry out trivial tasks have now been replaced with the efficiency of technology. It’s enough to make us feel worthless at times, yet we can’t help but marvel at the power of these modern miracles.

Couple that with a bit of AI functionality and machine learning and what you get now is their level of production has ascended enough to incorporate human behaviors. It’s almost scary to think that a robot can now operate at higher levels than previously conceived!

Boston Dynamics has revealed one of their most important prototypes in a video on Tuesday that shows the robots dancing to the 1962 hit, “Do You Love Me?” by the Contours.

The video has caught viral flame on the internet and has attracted thousands of intrigued viewers.

The company utilized two bipedal humanoid Atlas models to demonstrate their arsenal of dance moves.

And what a performance it was! The bots definitely impressed with their flawless execution of a variety of moves.

The clip starts with a white bot moving slowly as it starts to wind up for an onslaught of dance moves. It starts to two-step and move around gingerly in an exciting way.

The camera begins to pan out and we can see another bot also moving its legs rhythmically! They show us their own version of “the twist” and it looks exactly as the original.

“Our whole crew got together to celebrate the start of what we hope will be a happier year,” the Waltham, Massachusetts, company says in the caption.

The entire spectacle was truly astonishing.

It’s not an average day once we realize that bots are capable of competing with us, even as dancers. I mean, just look at how fluid these moves are! Who would’ve thought we could be soon seeing the age of a cybernetic apocalypse in real life. It’s both a haunting and exciting sight to see.

As the camera continued to pan out, more robot companions joined in on the fun!

One of which is a green, 4-legged bot that hilariously busts out its own array of dance techniques. Next thing you know, all three bots continue their routine in perfect synchronization: The two white bots mimic each other as the 4-legged bot takes center stage.

If you thought they were done here, you were severely mistaken.

As if things couldn’t get any stranger, more bots join in on the fun! A two-wheeled bot joins in and starts to side-wind in every direction to contribute some of its skills to the party.

The strange ensemble of robots has garnered a variety of different responses across the internet.

Some responses were delighted to see such an impressive display of technology and craftsmanship at work, while others expressed their concern for the future.

“Slightly creepy, I have to admit,” tweeted Carl Bildt, a Swedish diplomat who co-chairs the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Photographer Jan Nicolas also tweeted, “Do you love me? Not when you come to annihilate us,”

Say what you will about this brilliant performance- it at least demonstrates how far we’ve come with the advancement of robotics and technology in the modern era.

It’s a way to prove that progressing our civilization while having fun can coincide in one project.
